EDUCATION OF CIVIL DEFENSE EXPERTS AT THE FACULTY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES IN LJUBLJANA
Abstract
Defense studies at the University of Ljubljana have been conducted for the past 25 years and are focused on educating future civilian experts in defense matters. In this period, defense studies underwent three phases of development. The first phase (1975–1985) was characterized by the coexistence of two parallel programmes forming the Total National Defense Studies Programme: the first included social studies and was offered by the Faculty of Sociology, Political Sciences and Journalism, and the second was a copy of the national defense study programme of former Yugoslav Peoples’ Army. The second phase (1985–1992) brought the domination of social science courses and some additional defense topics. The third phase (1993–2000) was focused on the stabilization of defense studies within the frames of political science, yet retaining the identity of defense and security studies comparable to those offered by defense academies abroad. There are plans for the development of defense studies in the direction of including some basic science topics and study programmes for military professionals and crisis management experts.
