SLOVENIA’S PARTICIPATION IN THE »TRANS-CARPATHIA 2000« EXERCISE
Abstract
Slovenia is one of the first member countries of the Partnership for Peace which, at the request of the Euroatlantic Disaster Relief Coordination Centre (EADRCC) at NATO Headquarters, has made available its specialized unit – the Ecological Laboratory and Mobile Unit (ELME) of the Jožef Stefan Institute in Ljubljana – for joint actions. As an integral part of the Euroatlantic Disaster Relief Unit, ELME participated in the first Partnership for Peace exercise, »Trans-Carpathia 2000«, which was conducted in the area of the Transcarpathian region and its capital city, Uzgorod, in the Ukraine. During the exercise, ELME (and, through the commanding staff of the exercise, also the Slovene Administration for Civil Protection and Disaster Relief) verified in practice its readiness for providing assistance in another country and its participation in joint efforts with international units coordinated by EADRCC in close cooperation with the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Aid.
