THE TERMINOLOGICAL DICTIONARY OF FIREFIGHTING

Abstract

The Terminological Dictionary of Firefighting, a development and research project funded by the Fire Fund Management Committee of the Administration for Civil Protection and Disaster Relief, commenced in May 2021 and was completed at the end of November 2024. The result is a contemporary terminological dictionary which encapsulates the knowledge structure of Slovenian firefighting. In order to facilitate communication with international partners, English and German equivalents were included, verified and confirmed through foreign professional literature. The dictionary was developed through a collaborative effort between the Scientific Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts and the Firefighting Association of Slovenia, functioning as consortium partners. The compilation was prepared in accordance with contemporary terminological principles, with definitions formulated by Slovenian experts to accurately reflect Slovenian knowledge and the current state of firefighting in all relevant areas. This measure is intended to ensure that both professional and volunteer firefighters are well-informed. The dictionary is freely accessible in digital format via the Terminologišče website (https://isjfr.zrc-sazu.si/sl/terminologisce/slovarji/gasilstvo) and can also be searched through the central Slovenian dictionary portal, Fran (https://fran.si).
