Abstract

Strindberg’s literary project was initiated by promotion of the “modem ideas” which marked a period of the Scandinavian literature and culture, culminating in the decades of 1870s and 1880s. Its main topics were social issues, especially the women’s status and the morals of the sexes. The problem of woman and marriage turned into the fundamental paradigm of Strindberg’s literary and para-literary essays. After 1879, his typical attitude was antifeministic rejection of the contemporary women’s emancipation movement. In the late 1880s, he focussed on the struggle of sexes and on the negative femininity. Strindberg's perception of woman was adopted by several Slovenian authors, after the European literary movements and aesthetics of the late 19th century reached Slovenia around 1900, and again in the 1920s, after the drama of the German Expressionism restored appreciation of Strindberg’s naturalistic and symbolistic texts.
