The Paris Years of Anton Ocvirk

During his post-graduate studies in Paris, Anton Ocvirk met several distinguished French writers (Gide, Duhamel, Maurois) and asked them about their literary influences. He was also interested in Russian literature and the French “mirage” of the Soviet Union, as well as the sharp Russian criticism of it (by Shestov and Berdyaev). Paul Hazard, a scholar of comparative literature whose classes he attended at Collège de France, enabled him to give his own lectures in this institution, which were published in Revue de littérature comparéé in 1934 under the title of “La pensée européenne du XVIe au XVIIIe siècle et la littérature slovène”. His stay in France significantly changed Ocvirk’s life; it led him towards a detailed study of comparative literature, which at the time was exploring great European literary currents without overlooking the literatures of smaller nations.References
