National Poets and Cultural Saints: The Canonization of France Prešeren and Jónas Hallgrímsson

The article compares the canonization of two romantic poets, a Slovenian France Prešeren (1800–1849) and an Icelander Jónas Hallgrímsson (1807–1845). Both of them have undoubtedly reached a status of a national poet in their respective cultures. The article first outlines a general scheme for observing national poets as “cultural saints” and goes on to give an overview of parallels and also of dissimilarities in the two canonization processes. Although there are numerous parallels between the two poets that appear quite striking, it turns out that the canonical status of Prešeren is more dominant within the Slovenian culture when compared to the status and role of Jónas.References
