Rousseau’s Courtesan with a Noble Heart: The Predecessor of the Lady of the Camellias

This article analyses an episode from Rousseau’s novel The New Heloise in terms of its narrative pattern and the configuration of characters. In the text that is part of the letter corpus as a separate passage titled “Les amours de milord Edouard Bomston”, these elements were probably combined for the first time into a model that became established in the nineteenth-century story of the courtesan with a noble heart. Even before Rousseau’s version, individual elements of this model can be found within a different context: in Richardson’s novel Sir Charles Grandison and Prévost’s Manon Lescaut.References
